Brittney Griner, an American basketball player, is currently on trial in Russia for allegedly possessing cannabis illegally.

A court in the town of Khimki, outside of Moscow, was where Ms. Griner, a three-time WNBA league champion and seven-time All-Star was spotted entering shackled.

The 31-year-old may spend up to 10 years in jail if found guilty.

According to the US, she is imprisoned unlawfully and needs to be released. Russia disputes the idea that their detention is related to the hostilities in Ukraine between the US and Russia.

A senior US embassy official claimed to have spoken to Ms.Griner outside the courthouse and that she was “as well as can be expected.”

Elizabeth Rood, the deputy chief of mission in Moscow, said: “She requested me to convey that she is in excellent spirits and is maintaining the faith.”

On February 17, Ms. Griner was stopped at an airport in the Moscow region after reportedly having cannabis oil in her luggage.

She is regarded as one of the most dominant players in her sport’s history and a seasoned member of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Ms. Grinder’s wife Cherelle Griner said on the day of her trial that the Biden administration had done enough to bring her partner.

“I have to push individuals to make sure their behaviors reflect what they are telling me, she added, it’s quite challenging”.

US State Department officials chose not to comment.

The return of Ms. Griner to the US is the team’s top objective. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated in a tweet on Friday.

Ms. Griner had left the US for Russia to play for the EuroLeague team UMMC Ekaterinburg, where she had been employed since 2014. The majority of WNBA participate in off-season competitions abroad.

Given that WNBA players make around five times as much money in Russia as they do in the US; it’s a method for the majority of them to supplement their domestic income.

Ms. Griner could receive a term of up to 10 years in jail for “large scale drug transportation”.

However, even if acquitted at the trial, the government in Russia has the authority to overturn any decision and still send her to prison.
